Sewing Notes
Here are some tips we recommend for a successful sewing project:
Fit and Style
- Choose a size according to your hips measurements, referring to the body measurements chart. If your waist corresponds to another size, you can widen or taper the waist on the pattern as needed. To do so, shift the waist/side seam corner.
- On the finished garment measurements chart, you can also check the length of the garment and see if it’s suitable for your height. You may want to compare the length with a similar piece of clothing. This is a mid-calf length skirt.
- If you want to adapt the length of your garment to your height, check this helpful tutorial here!
Fabrics
- This pattern is adapted for non-stretch fabrics only. I recommend that you pick medium-weight denim (10-12 oz), depending on the strength of your sewing machine. Don’t hesitate to use lighter denim if you know that your sewing machine struggles with thicker fabric.
- You can also use other woven fabrics such as corduroy, velvet, or twill!
- Be sure that you pick a main fabric and a pocket lining with a similar fiber content so it’s easier to watch the finished garment. For instance, if you’re using a 100% cotton denim, be sure that the pocket lining is also 100% cotton.
Cutting out
- Before you start cutting your fabrics, wash and dry them like you’d do for the finished piece. Keep in mind the fabric type and what it’s made of so you choose the right cleaning method (like how hot the water should be or what kind of cycle to use…). Plus, the dyes used on certain fabrics tend to bleed when washed, so wash yours separately, or with similar colors.
- After you wash and dry the fabric, give it a good press to get rid of any creases. Just make sure your iron is set to the right temperature for the fabric. Generally, synthetic fibers like acrylic, spandex, or polyester should be pressed on low heat, while natural fibers like cotton, wool, or linen can handle higher heat.
- When you’re set to cut the fabric, just fold it lengthwise right sides together. Make sure the fold is straight and doesn’t twist up. If it does, unfold it and refold until it’s nice and flat. Then, lay out the pattern pieces so the grainline runs parallel to the selvages.
- Make sure you don’t cut the notches too long; aim for them to be around 0.3-0.4 cm long (1/8″). Also, be sure to also trace all the pattern markings on the fabrics with a tailor’s chalk or a fabric marker.
Sewing
- For safety reasons, it’s important to pick a thicker sewing needle when you sew with denim. Don’t skip over this step! Check for a 16 or 18 size needle, or one labelled for jeans.
- If you wish to use topstitch thread, wind the bobbin with a matching regular thread, and be sure to make a tension test on a scrap of fabric before you start to sew. You may need to increase the tension.
- You need an unusual tool to sew with denim: a hammer. It will be very handy if you need to flatten a few areas that are too thick. Plus, you also need it to install the jeans button.
- If you’re not sure how to sew buttonholes, be sure to check your sewing machine manual. The process will vary from one machine to another.
Good luck with your sewing project!

Thank you, much appreciated!!
is there instructions for how to sew these parts together?? i can’t find anything
please help me find the instructions!
ur page sucks why would u not tell us we would have to pay for it after telling us the pattern is free? you should put in the notes first that the tutorial isn’t free this is very annoying and I have spent time and money on this!
All patterns are free, option to select sizes, and are absolutely fabulous. I have been trying to properly fit patterns for the past six years. These FREE patterns are the absolute best with measurements. I am petite. If you are a fairly competent sewer, you don’t need instructions. Want to learn how to sew a fly front go on YouTube etc. I did buy three pattern instructions, they were $3.00. For these patterns, Zelena is owed much more money! So, please redact your inaccurate comment for the sake of those of us so thankful for these patterns and accurate sizing.
Hi! I only have slightly stretch denim on hand. Are there any adjustments I should make to the pattern to have a good result? Thanks 🙂
Once you assemble the side seams, try out the skirt and see if you need to taper it around the hips.
Thanks! Will try and report back 🙂
