Sewing Notes

Here are some tips I recommend for a successful sewing project:

Fit and style

  • Choose a size with your bust. Then, if needed, you can adjust the elastic length if you need to widen or narrow the garment at the waist. Refer to the body measurements chart.
  • On the finished garment measurements chart, you can also check the length of the garment and see if it’s suitable for your height. You may want to compare the length with a similar piece of clothing. This top is cropped at the waist.
  • If you want to adapt the length of your garment to your height, check this helpful tutorial here!

Fabric

  • Choose a lightweight fabric with a nice and soft drape. This pattern was not designed for stretch fabrics or knits. I recommend choosing a natural fiber, which is more breathable during those hot summer days.

Cutting out

  • Preshrink the fabric before you start cutting it out. To do so, wash and dry the same way you would with the finished garment. This means you should also take into account the fabric type and its content.
  • Once the fabric is washed and dried, press it to remove all the creases. Be sure that you’ve set your iron to a temperature that is suitable to the fabric. As a rule of thumb, synthetic fibers (acrylic, spandex, polyester…) should be pressed at low heat, and natural fibers (cotton, wool, linen…) should be pressed at high heat.
  • When youโ€™re ready to cut into the fabric, fold it lengthwise, right sides together. The fold should not twist and lay flat. If itโ€™s twisting, unfold and fold again, until it lays flat. Then, place the pattern pieces so that the grainline is parallel to the selvages.
  • Be sure that you donโ€™t cut the notches too much, they should be about 0.3-0.4 cm long (1/8″).

Sewing

  • Before you start sewing, grab a scrap piece of fabric and try out a few stitches to see how the tension and stitch length look. If the seam isnโ€™t turning out great, try re-threading your machine first. Still not working? Then go ahead and adjust the tension. As for stitch lengthโ€”thicker fabric usually needs longer stitches, so adjust that as needed. And if your stitches are skipping, switch to a new needle or to a bigger one.

Good luck with your sewing project!

Hello, there’s no sleeve pattern because it’s a dolman / kimono sleeve. So it’s built in the bodice.

I’m having trouble figuring out where to attach the cords. It appears to me that the notches are at the sleeve edge. I didn’t see any on the neckline, assuming I have the pattern oriented correctly. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hello! The placement is indicated by a marking (cross inside a circle) on the neckline edge, a bit below the shoulder.

Hello! I dont understand the belt; the piece on the pattern seems very small for a belt. What am I missing? Thank you!

I have the same concern. I tried looking up if someone on YouTube has made this top but i couldnโ€™t find any. If you or someone else has figured it out, can you please give us some advice on what to do.

you need to fold your fabric in half and cut the belt with the short side on the fold, so you end up with one fabric piece that is double as large as the paper pattern piece once you unfold the fabric.

    you do this twice.

Printed and taped the pattern, however, there are no SLEEVES.

Yes there are SLEEVES. They are dolman style sleeves, so built-in the front and back bodices.
