Sewing Notes
Here are some tips we recommend for a successful sewing project:
Fit and style
- Choose a size according to your bust measurement. Refer to the body measurements chart.
- On the finished garment measurements chart, you can also check the length of the garment and see if it’s suitable for your height. You may want to compare the length with a similar piece of clothing. This jacket is slightly shorter than a regular jacket, so it should cut below the waistline or at the high hips.
- If you need to shorten or lengthen the garment to achieve this look, slash the pattern above the bottom edge of the garment. Then, spread to add length, or overlap to shorten. When you spread the pattern, fill in the gap with scraps of paper. Tape everything back in place.
- If you adjust the pattern, be sure to replace the button and buttonhole symbols so that they are evenly spaced. You might also need to resize the pockets if you make a big adjustment. You want the bottom of the pocket to be about 4 cm (1 1/4″) above the hemline. The top of the pocket should lay slightly below the 3rd button (from the top).
- Adjust also the length of the sleeve by the same amount you added or removed on the body.
Fabrics
- This pattern is adapted for non-stretch fabrics only. I recommend that you pick medium-weight denim (10-12 oz), depending on the strength of your sewing machine. Don’t hesitate to use lighter denim if you know that your sewing machine struggles with thicker fabric.
- You can also use other woven fabrics such as corduroy, or twill!
- If you’re using corduroy, be sure to place the pieces so that the pile runs toward the bottom of the garment.
Cutting out
- Preshrink the fabric before you start cutting it out. To do so, wash and dry the same way you would with the finished garment. This means you should also take into account the fabric type and its content.
- Once the fabric is washed and dried, press it to remove all the creases. Be sure that you’ve set your iron to a temperature that is suitable to the fabric. As a rule of thumb, synthetic fibers (acrylic, spandex, polyester…) should be pressed at low heat, and natural fibers (cotton, wool, linen…) should be pressed at high heat.
- When you’re ready to cut into the fabric, fold it lengthwise, right sides together. The fold should not twist and lay flat. If it’s twisting, unfold and fold again, until it lays flat. Then, place the pattern pieces so that the grainline is parallel to the selvages.
- Be sure that you don’t cut the notches too much, they should be about 0.3-0.4 cm long (1/8″).
Sewing
- For safety reasons, it’s important to pick a thicker sewing needle when you sew with denim. Don’t skip over this step! Check for a 16 or 18 size needle, or one labelled for jeans.
- If you wish to use topstitch thread, wind the bobbin with a matching regular thread, and be sure to make a tension test on a scrap of fabric before you start to sew. You may need to increase the tension.
- You need an unusual tool to sew with denim: a hammer. It will be very handy if you need to flatten a few areas that are too thick. Plus, you also need it to install the jeans button.
- If you’re not sure how to sew buttonholes, be sure to check your sewing machine manual. The process will vary from one machine to another.
Good luck with your sewing project!

Hi, Zelena: This new jacket pattern looks cute!
I wonder if you can post a photo of the jacket so we can see how it looks on a model.
Thanks,
Marjorie
Hello!
I just made this jacket.
I added an extra 3 inches to the arms and the length since I’m 5’8 and wanted it to go just below my waist.
It’s a super easy make and very cute.
Hi Zelena, thank you for your free patterns. I am making the new Denim Jacket, everything has gone together nicely except the collar, I am having a problem with the collar it seems too big, have I done something incorrect? Regards Fay
I have just cut out this pattern but the front shoulder is too long for the back yolk shoulder. Also the front marking for centre and button hole turning differ top to bottom.
Am I missing something.
Are you sure your pattern is printed correctly? The shoulders are matching on all sizes. I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying about the buttonholes. Maybe send me an email with photos.
hi! I have the same problem for the shoulder yoke, definitely too small..The shoulders don’t match, neither do the shoulder yoke and the back
It’s impossible, I think your pattern was printed wrong. Check the tutorial on how to print and try the “print as image” tip. You can also send me a photo via email to show me what’s the problem.
Download the pattern again and print pages 12 and 16 to get the new yoke. Another commenter sent me a photo and I accidentally shrunk that piece when making the pattern layout!!
