Sewing Notes
Here are some tips we recommend for a successful sewing project:
Fit and style
- This coat is loosely fitting, so it’s not necessary to blend between the sizes. If you’re larger at the hips, choose a size according to your hips measurements. On the contrary, if you’ve got a fuller bust, choose a size according to your bust. Either way, refer to the body measurements chart.
- On the finished garment measurements chart, you can also check the length of the garment and see if it’s suitable to your height. You may want to compare the length with a similar piece of clothing. This coat is cropped so it should stops above the hips.
- If you need to shorten or lengthen the garment to achieve this look, slash the pattern above and below the waist notch. Slash perpendicularly to the grainline, and spread to add length, or overlap to shorten. When you spread the pattern, fill in the gap with scraps of paper. Tape everything back in place. Be sure to do this on the pattern pieces of both the outer layer and lining.
- If you adjust the pattern, be sure to replace the button and buttonhole symbols so that they are evenly spaced.
- Adjust also the length of the sleeve by the same amount you added or removed on the body.
Fabrics
- Your fabric should have a bit of stiffness and weight, avoid fluid fabrics. Also, be sure that you pick a fabric and a lining with a similar fiber content so it’s easier to watch the finished garment.
- The lining should have a more slippery feel so it doesn’t stick to your shirts when you wear the finished garment.
Cutting out
- Preshrink the fabric before you start cutting it out. To do so, wash and dry the same way you would with the finished garment. This means you should also take into account the fabric type and its content.
- Once the fabric is washed and dried, press it to remove all the creases. Be sure that you’ve set your iron to a temperature that is suitable to the fabric. As a rule of thumb, synthetic fibers (acrylic, spandex, polyester…) should be pressed at low heat, and natural fibers (cotton, wool, linen…) should be pressed at high heat.
- When you’re ready to cut into the fabric, fold it lengthwise, right sides together. The fold should not twist and lay flat. If it’s twisting, unfold and fold again, until it lays flat. Then, place the pattern pieces so that the grainline is parallel to the selvages.
- Be sure that you don’t cut the notches too much, they should be about 0.3-0.4 cm long (1/8″).
Sewing
- This coat is fully lined, so you don’t need an overlocker. However, if your fabric or lining frays a lot, you may want to overlock all around the edges once the pieces are cut into the fabric. You can prevent fraying with a sewing machine by sewing a zigzag stitch right on the edges of the fabric pieces.
- If you’re not sure how to sew buttonholes, be sure to check your sewing machine manual. The process will vary from one machine to another.
Good luck with your sewing project!

It’s beautiful!!🥰 Thanks!!
Thank you Sonia!
Absolutely love it! please include bigger sizes too!
Thank you! I’m sorry for the lack of sizes. Unfortunately, I get my stuff stolen and sold on Etsy so I don’t want to add too many sizes. I’ll post a method so you can add your own sizes if you’re interested.
hola. Me gustarÃa saber cómo convertir el patrón para un talle más grande.gracias.
Yes please- I would love to make this but will need a larger size. Thanks for sharing your patterns, they are lovely.
I need a larger size too. Could I just add a couple inches around patter pieces?
Thanks for this pattern, just what I was looking for, already printed it out! Noticed there is a seam in the sleeve but no shaping, is it just decorative? Also, noticed the line drawing is missing the welts. I was happy when I noticed it actually has pockets 🙂 thank you!!
Thank you for this! I am working on making this jacket now and just got to the part in the instructions about making the pleat in the back lining, but I don’t see where the pleat is on the pattern. I’m new to sewing, so I might just not understand the markings, but could you explain where it should be?
There’s a notch about 2cm from each side of the fold line. You need to place the two notches on top of each other. This kind of pleat disappear gradually toward the bottom of the garment.
Thank you for answering! I see where it is marked now. Should I sew exactly where the notches are or just 1 cm from the fold like the seam allowance? Also, how long should I sew down from the top?
You don’t need to sew the pleat, just overlap the two notches and baste the overlapped parts about 0.5 cm from the top edge to keep the pleat in place. It’s called a knife pleat and you can orient it on either side of the garment.
Muy bonito!! ¿PodrÃan compartir tallas más grandes? Muchas gracias.!!
Hi! Sorry. I just can’t find the instructions? Thank you so much,
Ellie
I can’t find the instructions either
Please read the post, the instructions are there with some video tutorials.
Is there a more comprehensive guide than the notes given? I’m fairly new at sewing, so wondering if this is too big of a project for me. Looks amazing!
No I don’t have more details. I added videos that you can follow to make the pockets and attach the lining.
I love the simplicity and style of the Wool Coat with Shirt Collar.
Is it still possible to get the pattern in a XL size? Are instructions included?
Regards, Kathy D., [email protected]
there are pattern pieces for pockets but no markings on the pattern as to the placing of the welt and no welt pattern pieces. What a shame and I just printed off the 32 pages and joined them altogether?
The markings are on the front panel, page 3 & 4. Welt is on page 14 & 15.
I am sorry but if you put even a free pattern on like this, some explanation is needed to save your followers wasting time and money on assembling the pattern and buying expensive fabric. There are markings for where the welt should go but 2 lots of 10 circles with a + in means absolutely nothing. What do they match up with on the welts? You are assuming that everyone is an experienced sewer and knows how to put a jacket together. Your basic instructions on what order to assemble in is meaningless. Assembling and fitting the collar for instance?
hello. Love this pattern and am keen to make it. I have printed out the pattern pieces but cannot see where the step by step instructions are. Can you help me with that?
Hi, please read the blog post! The instructions are there and I even put some video tutorials…
Hello, I made it and it looks great although the M-L is big.
Thanks very much for the free pattern. I made this recently and here are some pattern adjustments I would make if I were to do it again:
other than those 2 things the drafting felt true to size and I have worn my jacket regularly since making it.
Hi Charlie, I also have issues with the collar also. Would you please share how I can draft the collar stand?
Thanks so much for the free pattern!
I’m wondering if anyone can shed light on why the front center hem is shorter than the rest? Why is there a little rectangle ‘cut out’ so to speak. It’s obviously a technique I don’t know (I’m a bit of a newbie!) and I’m super keen to learn 🙂
Hi, please check the video at the end of the blog post “how to attach the bottom of the lining” you’ll see why. Basically, this portion of the garment doesn’t have a hem.
Hi, do I have to add the allowance myself or is it already included in the pattern?
Hi there,
I am new to your website, is there instructions some where?
this pattern looks lovely!
thanks!
Hi, thanks for the pattern. What is the opening in the arm seams for?
Is tthe seam allowance included in the pattern?
hi there, I’m struggling with the assembly of this coat, in particular the back…I have cut two separate pieces but I’m wondering if it’s supposed to be cut on the fold? I can’t work out how to attach them together and have a pleat? Any help gratefully received!!!
do the patterns you attached have a scale? Like 1:3 or 1:4?
No, it’s true to size. Scale is 100%
Thank you very much for this pattern, I am eager to try! I noted however that the page has been modified and the links to sewing the welt pocket and attach the lining has disappeared. I checked mutiple time, even on my Pc instead than on the phone.
Can you please share the links again?
Hello, I removed the links because I started to add my own tutorials. If you’re interested, they are on my kofi shop for a low cost. Check in the blog post for the link. Otherwise, look for “How to Sew a Jacket Welt Pocket” on you tube. Thanks!
Hi Zelena!!!! I love all your patterns. I´m going to try the Peter Pan collar blouse and I was wondering if the Sizing Guide above applies to all your patterns, to be used as a guide, and if ease is included in all of them?
I´d like to know if the Peter Pan blouse pattern has ease been included in the pattern.
Thanks a lot
Hello, I changed the sizing guide over time so it’s best you check each page. Body measurements don’t have ease and garment measurements have ease.
Quite clear your answer!!! Thanks a lot
Bonne couture !!! 🙂
Thank you Lucie for your kind words, I’m glad you like the coat pattern.
Hi Zelena! Thank you so much for the beautiful timeless coat pattern! I made three already and got a lot of compliments! I downloaded the pattern before you updated with the XS size. After making the first one with size S, I modified pattern to be smaller. But now I’m excited to make the 4th one with the size XS pattern.
I have one request, would you please include the collar stand in the collar pattern? Because the stiffness of the fabric, the collar just doesn’t sit quite right. I omitted the collar when sew the 3rd one. Thank you so much!
Hello, Im considering sewing this coat, do you have any other advises?. How do you make collar stand to match with this project?
